-- Third quarter 2005 consolidated revenue increased 14% to $497.5 million, from $436.0 million during the third quarter 2004. The increase is primarily attributable to an approximate 12% increase in student population from July 31, 2004, to July 31, 2005, as well as price increases and student enrollment mix changes.

Labour seeks investigation of ‘degree mill’ universities

The Labour Party has called for an investigation into so-called ‘degree mill’ universities following revelations that a number of Irish officials and academics have questionable qualifications.

The Government's chief science advisor, Barry McSweeney, was moved to a new civil service job earlier this month when it emerged that he had received his PhD from the Pacific Western University.

The US institution is known for selling such qualifications online.

The controversy surrounding the McSweeney issue prompted another official, Dr Con Power, to admit that his doctorate was also obtained from PWU.

Sanford Brown Insitute - Landover Campus, Medical Assistant Program ripped me off! I have been unable to graduate because there was no follow-up with one of the doctors I was on externship with.

The first doctor I was assigned to for externship was verbally abusive, had me performing work not related to my clinical and classwork, such as vacuuming floors and emptying garbage cans.

I have read many of the entries on here and am very upset I didn't know of this before I made a huge mistake by enrolling at AIU Online. Basically, it has been a train wreck since day one however I managed to get though ALL the episodes until December 2004.

60 Minutes Says For-profit Colleges Mislead Students

In a "60 Minutes" piece, broadcast Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, several colleges owned by Career Education Corporation were accused of misleading students, leaving them with sup-par education and training, while burdening them with thousands of dollars in students loans to repay. Additionally, schools like CEC's Brooks College were said to pressure admissions officers into signing up students clearly unfit for college. During the segment a 60 Minutes producer posed as a would-be student for CEC's Sanford-Brown College. During the admissions interview, which was taped with a hidden camera, the prospective student is admitted for training in healthcare, even though she admits to her admissions counselor that she was a "stoner" in high school and had bad grades. Several former admissions officers described themselves as being no better than "used car salesmen" who were forced to focus only on their sales numbers.

What is going on… at the Memorial branch?
In 5 months I have shown up and suited up. In 5 months I have approached my job with interest and enthusiasm. So what happened? Lets take a look. My only scorecard reflected a 93-94%. I have been out of the office more than one full month enrolled in multiple training sessions, when real issues awaited real solutions. When I was at the office how many of those days were we at the full (and necessary, otherwise why would we even have that number allotted for employment here.) staff of 7 people?
On a few months of calendars on which I took quick, observational notes of when employees were out for one thing or another (ex: Patrick out for rest of day 2 pm.) The numbers seem impossible to see how anything let alone goals could be met. We hear in Monday meetings.. “this branch does 5-7,000 transactions a month” what wasn’t mentioned in that little stat fact is the fact that of that month we were only at full staff less than 5 days. And more than likely we were at least 2 and even (on multiple days) 3 people short (I am not referring to Wednesdays. .I am referring to Fridays and Mondays the busiest days at this branch). And as always at 5 pm Patrick’s phone call comes in…asking “if we hit our goals…did we make business calls? Did you finish that project that I left for you?” Lets see…realistic? Only he would think so. So what does this tell us? 3 out of 7 employees on staff on a Friday. One leaves at 4:15. 40-50 transactions in less than 40 mins. Customers leave bitching about the poor customer service in both the lobby and the teller line. Patrick gets a report that concerns him because a shopper gave us a break and gave a 90 on a shop.

Steve Bostic, owner of one percent of the outstanding shares of Career Education Corporation (Nasdaq: CECO), today announced that he sent the following letter to Jack Larson, chairman, president and chief executive officer
Dear Jack: The results of the May 20, 2005 annual meeting of CECO stockholders were unprecedented and indicate the extraordinary level of stockholder support for meaningful reform at Career Education and the lack of support for the current CECO Board.
In fact, the real level of stockholder discontent was even more striking than the numbers indicate. Due to a New York Stock Exchange decision, CECO's vote tally is obscured by the "free votes" the Company garnered under the controversial routine broker-vote rule pursuant to which the Exchange determined that my proxy solicitation in opposition to CECO's was a "routine matter" because I did not nominate an alternate slate. Consequently, approximately 14 million shares, for which the brokers never received instructions from their clients, were automatically voted in favor of CECO's directors. If you exclude these "phantom" votes, the true tally shows that more than 80% of the shares voting withheld authority on directors -- a first in corporate governance history.

Has Career Education Learned Its Lesson?
Despite government probes from without and proxy battles from within, this for-profit school appears ready to reward investors who grade on the curve.
It's amusing to ponder how Harvard's fictional Professor Kingsfield (he's the guy from The Paper Chase who told his first-year law students that their minds were "mush" and who delighted in humiliating them as often as possible) would react if he suddenly found himself teaching for a for-profit college such as Career Education (Nasdaq: CECO).
One can only imagine his reaction upon learning that he was supposed to offer his students "fast-paced programs that provide a good return on their tuition investment," in the words of Steve Bostic, CECO's largest individual stockholder.

External inquisitions: you would be wise to consider this company's recent past. Below are just a few of the more unwelcome developments:The U.S. Department of Education has refused to approve CECO's applications for new locations until it completes its review of the company's "restated" financial reports. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is investigating charges that women were subjected to sexual harassment.The SEC's "enforcement division" is still looking at CECO's 10-K filings for 2003 and 2004. In a 60 Minutes expose that aired on Jan. 30, 2005, former admissions representatives admitted that they "were really salespeople," expected to enroll three high school graduates a week, "regardless of their ability to complete the coursework." Finally, the Department of Justice has been analyzing a slew of lawsuits by former students, investors, and employees -- including Vinod Kapoor, a former faculty member at AIU in Los Angeles. Kapoor filed a wrongful termination suit against CECO after he was fired in March 2004 for complaining that he was pressured to keep failing students on his class list so that the school could continue to receive federal funds, and that many students in his classes did not have high school degrees, had no intention of attending classes, and were sometimes simply fictitious names on the roster.Their recruitment and enrollment procedures are meanspirited. Despite the litany of problems, CECO is nonetheless outperforming the industry as a wholeis fighting gainst its current litigation headaches. At the end of June, the company announced that a federal court dismissed a civil lawsuit alleging that the company submitted a false claim for payment to the federal government.(that was the only rock they looked under) a class action suit against the CEC online campus, brought by three former admissions officers who claimed they were denied overtime pay (although,this happens frequently).
