My boss won't talk to meSo I don't mind the job so much; a bit mind-numbing, but it's not bad. All my coworkers have told me I've caught on really fast. There were a lot of people out of the office last week, so I ended up picking up a lot of the slack and I was doing more work than some people who have been there for years. I don't mind. I like being kept busy. The only thing I don't understand is my boss. If this woman has something to say to me, she won't do it. She called the temp agency I'm working for because one morning my first week on the job, I was two minutes late. TWO minutes. I was transitioning straight from the restaurant there, I had worked eight days in a row and was getting used to the new schedule. So the temp agency called and "discussed" it with me. I told them they were insane. Then today she was going over all the orders from last week (I processed around 200) and two or three of them had minor mistakes. For a new person, I don't think that's bad at all; and once I found out, I took the necessary steps to fix them. NONE of them had any major consequences. Yet she told one of my coworkers what my mistakes were and had her go point them out to me. Wouldn't it just have been more efficient for her to tell me directly? Does she not realize that her unwillingness to tell me I made a mistake here and there makes them seem about ten times worse and makes me feel worse about them? Last week when we were temporarily shifting responsibilities due to 2 out of 6 CSR's being out, I changed from the territory I usually cover. I found out because I overheard her telling someone else. She also told them what she's training me on next, and when. Isn't this information she should tell me? It's making me a little paranoid and afraid of my boss. She always smiles and says hi when she sees me, and she was so nice when I interviewed....but I feel like I can't approach someone who can't approach me. I'm the youngest person in the office and this behavior makes me feel like more of a little kid. Anyone know what this could all be about? I think it's nothing more than a clueless boss who is too arrogant to address a temp agency employee. She probably also has a babysitter type of management philosophy. For her to sweat about you coming in two minutes late, and then call the agency about it... trust me, she's an arrogant control type. I would be up front and tell her you'd appreciate feedback from her. Do you know their history with temp workers? Have any temps been hired permanently? Or do they churn and burn help to keep costs low? Keep us posted. ...is what they told me this job was. I know I'm replacing someone who left four months ago....it took them that long to find someone and they (coworkers anyway) have nothing but praise for how I've done so far, so I'm not overly concerned that they won't take me on permanently in a couple of months once the bullshit of working for a temp agency is done. The system around here is too complicated to train someone on it every few months as far as I can tell; plus, they wanted someone bilingual and that's harder to find. I'm thinking I'm fairly safe as long as I wanna be. I may say something if things get any worse....right now it's not horrible, just irritating. She IS letting me be flexible with my hours due to some special circumstances coming up, although she seemed a little bitchy about it. Well hey, I work until 7:30 every night and don't get any vacation/personal days. Sorry my college roommate is getting married and as her videographer I'm invited to the rehearsal dinner so I'd like to work through lunch and leave at 6:30.... You're right though, and it may not be all her fault either - she doesn't know me and she may just be sniffing out the temp employee to see what kind of worker I actually am..... Your new boss is either one of these. She's either too passive aggressive to bring mistakes to your attention in a constructive way with "Look, I know you're new, these came to my attention. You're doing a great job, buy just try to keep your eye out for these things." because she feels that makes her look weak and she's just to afraid of any confrontation to willingly put herself in that position. So she makes other people do her dirty work and makes you feel like dirt. Or, she's just an incompetent ass who is intimidated by the fact that you've caught on quick. Her natural thought progression is "SHIT!! She knows how to do the job!! Soon she'll realize I don't know how to do fuck all!!" So she's going to try to make you feel uncomfortable in hopes that you'll either leave or just keep your mouth shut. She realizes that you are too valuable to just let go for no reason, so she's going to take the underhanded route. Just wait her out. She will invariably self destruct. Would you rather have her *in your face* shaking her head telling you "I can't believe you did that" (actual quote). Or reminding you of a mistake you made months ago, over and over? I'm surprised you posted a blog like this. I remember clearly the nasty things your old boss said to you. You would think you would like the arrangement. I don't know why she wouldn't talk to you, but IT'S GREAT FOR YOU and your mental health. I wish my coworkers would tell me instead of the bosses (plural) I have. I have three in my face. About being late 2 minutes. That's nothing. One of my ex-girlfriends had a job where if she was ONE MINUTE late it got put in her personnel file as an 'occurance'. If she got more than four occurances in a set time (I forgot) period she got written up! One minute! It's not insane. It's the norm at some places. [Moderator] Your boss sounds like the passive aggressive type. As long as you can handle the temp agency talking to you i wouldn't worry too much about it. Now your in your routine you probably don't have to worry about being late, and your data entry will probably go to about 100% accurate before long. Trust me. Just wait it out and see how it goes. |
