Dealing with Outdated TechnologyIs anyone else dealing with seriously outdated technology? My company is running Windows 95 on the registers. The store is only 4 years old meaning the Operating System was already outdated 6 years when it was installed. The registers continually freeze or completely shut down, randomly. We have four registers, but can only turn on three at a time because of the strain on the system. We look like idiots when on a busy Saturday, two of the three working registers crash. Customers have no sympathy (and shouldn't) for us when it does happen. IT's big fix? Turn the register off and on again and wait for the 10 minute reboot sequence. They have wasted hundreds, probably thousands of dollars shipping and replacing parts just to have the problems continue. They refuse to send a technician. Of course, the hand scanners and inventory system are constantly down, too. I finally got an IT guy to agree with me that the system is crap. Now, after a year of this, they are promising upgrades. Yea! Right! When pigs fly out of my butt! Lamia, my job also operates off of Windows 95, but then they keep upgrading our system's search engine-- and then wonder why we have so many problems. HELLO, maybe because our operating system is 10 FUCKING YEARS OLD !!!! Bookseller, nobody knows what is wrong with our system, other than it's crap. They finally sent a technician yesterday WHO DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE SYSTEM! There is a problem in the system that keeps infecting all the new CPU's we install, perhaps a corrupt file, which spreads like a virus. Today, they had us install a new server and the credit card/check authorization promptly went down, costing us $500 or more in sales. The server wasn't even the issue! I can't describe the number of different ways the computer finds to crap out on us. It freezes, spontaneously shuts down, tosses out a fatal error, etc., etc. The worst part was the woman who had a temper tantrum because we couldn't authorize her $300 check. She threatened to call the newpapers and report us! Even the other people in line looked at her like she was crazy! Oh, big news flash - a computer went down today! I figured she didn't have any money in her account, only people who know they're writing bad checks react like that. (That's another story in the continuing saga of retail hell!) I know what your saying about your job. That's kind of crappy. But I had to laugh because I have Millenium Edition here at home, and it's all I can do to keep my computer running during my website blogging!! Windows 98 and XP seem to be decent operating systems. I think in addition to our "I hate my job" blogs, maybe we should start a "Why are you stealing our money Bill Gates?" Site... L.O.L. Last week, the printer broke. Again. Was trying to fix the problem over the phone with the IT guy. I love our very patient IT guys, but why is the first question always "Did you check the cables?" Did the cables spontaneously explode out of the back of the CPU when no one was looking? It's possible! I inched the CPU forward to look at the cable connections and WHAM! the whole system went down...all the inventory computers, registers, e-mail, you name it! After we got the system back up, he said, "This time check the CPU without moving it." WHAT? I can't fit my head and shoulders into a six inch CPU cubby, not matter how I try, to look at the back of a CPU. And yes, I've tried. We wisely left the problem along until the store closed. Yesterday, a technician showed up unannounced to install high speed intranet connections in our store. They seem to think that will help our problem. Our problem is the copied software they keep cloning for each store, so better intranet won't work. To truly illustrate our problem, picture this...you just passed a Ford Pinto on the highway. It's belching smoke and the fan belt is whining. It has one brown door and plastic over the back window. Would putting high octane gas in the tank make a difference? That's us, only on the information superhighway! |
