Vacation, All I Ever Wanted....

Does anyone else have a job where you get no vacation/personal days whatsoever until you have been employed there for a year?

What's even more lovely in my case is that I'm a temp....so technically I'll be eligible for time off a year after my official hire date...so I will be working for this company for a year and three months before I can so much as ask for a single day off. Wheeeee!!!

I know the feeling! Where I work we do get 2 weeks vacation, however in my department, customer service, we can not make a request for time off if it is more than 90 days prior to our wanting the time off. So basically, if someone wants to go out of town for Thanksgiving and they know about it now, they can not even make the request until 90 days (or sooner) prior to Thanksgiving. When I asked my boss' supervisor about this, her response was it is the "industry standard" Funny, are rate of pay isn't quite up there with this "industry standard". They tried to pull this crap with me. I am planning a trip to New York City In August. I bought the non refundable airline tickets and tickets to a Yankees game (please don't pick on me, I know they suck this year)well in advance of 90 days, becasue you have to buy theses things in advance, and I was told i may not get the time off. My attitude was: You can give me the requested time off or not, either way I will be in NYC, and if you want me, you can come find me in the Bronx! They did give me the time off, but I was ready to just walk out of there, if they didn;t. Who am I joking.....I am ready to just walk out of there everyday!

I've had the same problem, at every new job I've ever worked at, it's been the same old shit...you have to work there for a full year before you are entitled to your paid time. The funny thing is, I've seen so many people come in after me and "negotiate" that clause. When you see someone new having a paid week off after working there six months or less it doesn't do much for your morale. I've never been much of a negotiator, in fact I've never even considered it, call it a personality flaw. So I say, take your two weeks no matter what the fuckers say, they have plenty of notice. Asking for that much notice is just another way to control and fuck people over. Take your two weeks and maybe look for another job while you are off like I am doing now. Enjoy your holiday because like the old saying goes..when you are laying on your death bed you are NOT going to say "Gee, I wish I'd spent more time at work"

Yeah, one of my friends is going to be in town next month....she's in the military and lives 500 or so miles away, but she's one of my best friends still. She wanted to get a group together to go to an amusement park, and I was crushed that I probably wasn't going to get to go along....then I decided to tell her, fuck it, I'm going to have food poisoning that day. I'm not one to lie or try to weasel out of work, but my job is not, nor will it ever will be, the important thing in my life.

Temp agencies are one of the biggest problems facing the worker today. It's a systematic way for companies to control costs and control workers.

....and to let bosses be so passive-agressive it's frightening. Any communication they have with me goes through the dumb bitches at the temp agency. Hooray!

...my co-workers were saying to me, "Hey, I bet they will offer you a job. You're really fast and you've been so helpful getting these done!" I said, "I'll pass, thanks."

Most of the people who work here permanently started as temps. When you start and people like you (because you create a situation where they can sit back and be lazy, of course), they want to keep you. So, they mention the "permanent placement" thing-- as if this is something all temps aspire to. You know, wave it under your nose like a hot pizza.

Except when you don't care. And you say so. And you could leave anytime and their free hammock ride they call work could be over if you walk... I used to get a bunch of attitude when I first got here. Interestingly, once I shrugged at the "Hey, want a job" offer, nobody has been anything but polite when they ask me to do something.

But yes, you are right. Temp agencies are highly exploitive-- mine is paying me $11 an hour but they are also getting $11 an hour while I work. Why? Because they found a place that can't hang onto its employees? That is so bad that a temp walked out just today? Why should the agency get $11 an hour because I'm doing 8 hours of work? The agency keeps telling me, "They might offer you a job, so it could go permanent!" as if this was a good thing. As soon as school starts, I'm taking a walk. They know that; I've made no secret of it and I have no problems with ignoring my supervisor and posting on this site during my work hours.

Yeah, temp agencies are exploitive but I make no apologies for exploiting them back! Resistance takes all forms...

Same here...no vacation until after 1 year of servitude. I got even better news for my 3rd Anniversary. I was supposed to get 2 weeks since I have tolerated them so long but they changed the policy last year (unbeknownst to me) so now I won't get 2 weeks until after 5 years. My job search just got more aggressive.

WTF?!! I can't believe what I'm reading!!! Over the UK it's standard that you get at least 4 weeks a year once you start a permanent position. None of this 'wait a year and we might let you take a day off' crap!! OMG!! What kind of places are you guys working?! I've had between 4-5 weeks holiday in every permanet position I've ever worked in...! Sorry, not trying to rub it in...I'm just astonished!! Even temps just let the agency know they won't be in and take a day..

Countries in Europe have a different attitude toward 'Holidays' as you say. Many European countries have a 4 weeks vacation policy.

In the U.S. it's different. I had to wait THREE YEARS to get a second week of vacation with my present company!

Employers in the U.S. don't believe in vacations and sick time anymore. It's all changed now. Breaks are becoming obsolete too.

Thursday morning at 8 am I have part 2 of a root canal, so I will
probably will a bit late and I will be docked.

But it's true, Europe has had a different mentality about workers
but that is changing as the competition is tougher. A lot of the
usual perks are going away and that includes the 100% medical coverage. Welcome to the real world!!!

Of course, when I worked for the Swiss, it seemed like every week
there was a Bank Holiday. Probably because they needed to count
their money!!!
