How some people get to the top is either blowing or boning others or office politics that got them there and nothing to do with skills or knowledge or their degrees. Just because one has a degree (and this is a general statement and for those that have degrees and work and prove it day in and day out, this doesn't include you that earned it) doesn't mean they sit back and put their feet up. If they don't keep on top of the game of whatever field they're in, they'll be left on the sidelines real quick and end up getting their dinners from a soup kitchen.

As Mister X said that a large reason people quit/leave their job is because of how management treats their employees. I wholeheartedly agree. Some years ago at the company Christmas party, I was talking to one of the general managers. He's a nice guy and in all my time there he never stepped on people or treated them like shit. He would always be friendly to everyone and ask them how they're doing and take some time out to talk briefly. We were discussing how at one time I was interested in going back to school to perhaps get a degree in management. We discussed some policies or way things could be improved. He said to me that half the managers and supervisors they have are shit and he wish he could can them (the company's unionized). He said the ideas I have and how I would approach things is the way it should be done and how to treat workers like people and not animals. He's a guy I would work for if he was my direct boss but he isn't. Unfortunately, the people in the middle can really fuck up a lot of things to keep the people that would be good supervisors or bosses from advancing and it seems that a good percentage of people in authority got up there with a bloody knife. And it's always the kiss asses with the bloody knife that got the positions.

Screw you and your bonuses and telling people to "just be happy about your job". Well let me tell you what some of us have to face and "be happy" about :

* Working for an hourly wage doing crap jobs for a Boss that doesn't appreciate what the fuck we've done.
* Taking constant verbal and mental abuse and having to deal with their hypocritical views about us.
* Getting called at 8am and told "Nothing to do today, have the day off". Day off = no pay.
* Being told we have "plenty of work" and then being told that we DON'T have the contracts.

I'm sure that if you weren't the real-life equivalent to Whelan Smithers you'd be here, bitching and moaning as to how much your job sucks.

And as far as respecting the Boss goes, I respect my Boss, however he chooses NOT to respect me or any of the staff! He barks orders, doesn't know the meaning of such words as 'courtesy','politeness' or even the word 'respect'.

Oh, and your statement of "Enough for now, gotta go choose who to layoff next week!" is laughable. You may be forced to deal with your OWN termination like some people I've heard about in the past. But be VERY careful who you piss off ... "The toes you tread on today, may be the attached to the feet that are attached to the legs that support the arse you'll be kissing tomorrow". All it takes is for your boss to want more money yet again, and start cutting back on such things as ... oooh ... smartarse hatchet people?

It's true, I saw him there mopping the floor one time and after that he had to go clean the shitters, he's been working there for like...15 years and still hasn't been promoted. He hasn't even made employee of the month yet. But he has a such rich fantasy life and this keeps him going. So we have to humour his sorry pock marked ass I suppose. One day soon he will save enough money to go back to night school and get his high school diploma then the world will be his oyster.
