Large office or small?I work in a very large office of about 200 people. While there are some decent, hard working people there I am in the unfortunate position of being an office support person. Now, I don't mind doing this kind of work at all. The thing is, most of the other clerical staff, they just don't seem very brigt. More and more I have begun to learn they were hired because of who they know in the company, or, and I hate to say this, to meet a "quota" of diverse characters. I worked hard in night school, okay, I have an associates in liberal arts, and I may help the "quota" by being an older female (not that old but older!) but at least I have a brain to use. I am a good worker who always seems to take on the bulk of responsibility, therefore, getting the bulk of the blame. I'm tired of the stress, and I'm tired to trying to teach people how to turn on a computer, how to fax, how to put paper in the fax machine, etc. So, as I spend another sunday with my nose in the wantads, I was beginning to wonder if maybe I would be better off in a small office environment. With very few people to deal with, maybe it woudn't be so frustrating. What do you all think about small offices compaired to the large setting? Is it better, worse, the same? What do you think? Right now, I am in a small office. From the day I walked in, I have felt like an outsider. It is getting a little better, from employee turn over, certainly not management taking charge. I read somewhere where a workplace was compaired to a family with absent alcoholic parents and out of control kids. I thought they were talking about where I work. The employees are always looking for someone to make a mistake so they can "tattle tale" on them. The bosses let all this go on. They like it actually, having the employees police for them. The company drama queen runs the show most days. There is one benefit though, I can sit here all day and not do a thing, nothing, just be present and looking at my computer. However, I better not put down on my time card that I took a 1/2 hour lunch when I took a 45 minute lunch. I guess that is one area the boss can actually monitor, doesn't take much brains either. Crazy, huh? I never had this sort of thing disfunction) at a large company. Maybe because there are more bosses, they tend to do a better job. I don't know. Right now, I am kind of blue but when I get out of this funk, I am looking for a new job, in a large company. Oh, then we have a company picnic, I don't want to associate with these people outside of work but, being a small company, they see that you are not there and sort of make you uncomfortable the next week. It sucks. So a small office may not be all that great, either, lol. That company picnic thing is scary. Well, wolfietherat thanks for responding, you've given me some things to think about:) Depends on the people. I worked at a very small place one time and enjoyed it too the max because the people were OK, except the boss but that is another story!!! I've worked both large and small places, some I liked, some I didn't but the size didn't matter (LOL in this case anyway), It all depends on how the owners/managers run their company.... |
