Opinions - How do you deal with the "game" in a work environmentHi y'all! My question today is, and I just can't grasp how to do so, how can you deal with workplace assholes without getting in truble. Referring to my last job, I know I was targeted because of my personality (being outgoing, laughing and making others laugh, and speaking my mind and not giving a shit on who's offended, because lets face it, EVERYONE gets offended nowdays) Can you all give me and others feedback on how to deal and cope. My only solution is just to be a deaf-mute, and stick to myself, but that's just not in my personality. Sorry, but there is little room for individuality in most corporate workplaces. Managers and the C-level execs lead the pack and if you want to fit in, get promoted, and move up the line, you must dress, walk, and talk like them. Making people laugh? That's a great skill, but it'll hold you back. The problem is that nobody will ever promote a "joker" to management, because they'll be afraid that you'll try to be friends with your subordinates rather than lean on them to get the job done. Do the managers at your company laugh, talk, and bullshit with their coworkers? I doubt it. I should know. I have a great sense of humor. I've even performed stand-up comedy and gotten paid for it. I used to think that if I made friends with most people at my workplace, I'd move up. Instead, I was downsized with little more than a "take care, pal" and escorted to the parking lot, carrying a bag of all my office stuff. That was almost two years ago. Now I'm wiser. If you work for somebody else, especially a large company, you need to play the role. And the role isn't being a joker, being outgoing, being friendly, or anything else that's perfectly natural to people. It's conforming to the company, getting the work done, doing it as well as it can be done, and asking for more. If this sounds like something you can't stand or won't tolerate, then you need to seriously reconsider working for these types of companies. There are jobs out there where you can be yourself, but you won't find them on Monster.com What type of job are you doing, since we bother have the same personality, downwardly. Another person had said sales, I did see an ad on CareerBuilders about car sales, no experience, I never considered sales because even though I have a colorful personality, I never thought I could sell myself if I were a hooker. I appreciate your advice and comment, downwardly_mobile is absolutely right; if you have a personality that differs from the corporate mold you will get absolutely no where. It's sad that hard work and a pleasing personality doesn't get you promotion; you have to kiss ass and conform to move up. This is especially true when you are dealing with managers that have poor people skills; they're threatened by people who get on well with people and can get their job done at the same time. It's a matter of jealousy. My advice: A) Find a job in a non-corporate work enviro that is still big enough (more than 40 people)that you don't have small office politics B) Get a job in Sales - It's the only job where having a personality pays Or, C) Bite the bullet, keep to yourself during 9-5 hours, and store up your gregariousness for friends outside of work. It makes the work day dull, and it's absolutely nauseating to think of kissing the ass of management retards who don't know their asses from a hole in the ground, but you'll be more successful (career-wise) in the long-run. I, by nature am funny. I can make any type of person laugh, I even have clean jokes for the relgious zealots. But this came back to bite me in the ass big time. I was told I was ry-ling everybody up and work wasn't getting done... which is complete bullshit! They demoted me to night shift where according to my boss "I can't make anymore waves" |
