Do I LOOK like a 7-11?

I work at a place with a lot of psychologists and the like. I am the executive director.

My boss is, at first blush, a sweet 70+ year old grandmotherly type. But she just does not understand why I can't be at f**king beck and call 24/7. She's called me at 6 in the morning, 11:00 p.m., and on one of the very few days I actually called off sick she called me so many times that I ended up going to work.

Now I understand that she's a therapist and she's got patients calling her at all times of the day and night. But...guess what - I'm not a f***ing therapist!

The last straw was when she called me at 11:00 p.m. on a Friday night to ask me who was taking care of breakfast at the seminar the next morning (answer - she was). Although I have asked her only to call me at home if it's an emergency (and clearly she has no idea of what that is) I told her never to call me at home again. Ever.

Well now she's pissed at me. For a week she didn't talk to me (okay not such a bad thing) but I've got my review coming up next week, and despite the fact that I've brought in more than 35K in the first 4 months of my employment (that, according to them, should warrant a bonus), Grandma Boss now tells me that "perhaps I'll get a bonus at year-end". It's her little way of trying to stick it to me.

You know, I used to go to a bar that had a sign that said "free beer tomorrow" - and of course tomorrow never came. So does she actually think when year-end comes I'll expect that bonus? What is she, crazy (okay, that's entirely possible)?

When did it become alright for bosses to call employees at work at all times of the day or night? And guess what - she hasn't stopped calling - she's only stopped leaving messages. She doesn't know this, but I got caller ID. She's a crazy bitch!

Tell her she needs therapy.

I worked for a big ole group of them, they are the most disorganized, disjointed group of retards. They should not be responsible for the mental health of ANYONE. Look what Grandma Moses has done to yours! Just move on, she'll dangle that bonus carrot till you either leave or kill her.

If you were sick you shouldn't have answered the phone. YOU WERE SICK. You were too weak. You went back to work because you showed her you were NOT sick.

You need to grow a back bone. I use caller ID and don't answer the phone. You could have said you "slept all day" or was vomiting all day.

If you don't answer the phone it means you are out shopping. YOU ARE NOT HOME. I can't believe you pick that damn phone up. Sorry, but it makes me very mad when people don't fight back these assholes. Get a cell phone and have your home phone shut off.

I forgot to mention in my little rant that my boss also has OCD. I did let the phone ring - and ring - and ring (I'm supposing it rang - I turned all of the ringers off and let the machine get it). She left about 6 messages before I did pick up.

OCD people are like a dog on a pant leg. They are, well, obsessive. Because she was bound and determined to get in touch with me - I wouldn't have put it past her to get in her car and drive over to my house and ring the bell until I came to the door. That's what obsessive compulsive people do - she wanted to talk to me and wasn't going to take no for an answer.

You are right that I should have said something right then and there - maybe the cold medicine wore down my resistance. But I did say something the next time she called. And while she is continuing to call, she is not dumb enough to leave a message. I consider this a small victory.

And while I whine about this job, I actually am doing something about it - I'm vigorously looking for another one. That's more than I can say about a lot of ranters that stay in their job and aren't trying to leave - or change their environment.

Just my 2 cents - Mr./Ms. you better grow a backbone!
