Other Duties As Assigned

Just call the Ministry of Labour and they are basically saying that there is nothing that I can do about the additional tasks that I have been assigned. Who gives a fuck that they are tasks that are assigned to higher paying job titles. Fuck them and their “other duties as assigned”. That fucking phrase should be against the law

That phrase is there in job descriptions to cover their ass. I gather you are in the UK? In the U.S., where people love to sue people, that famous phrase is there for employers so you and other people can't sue them.

Here's an example - let's say there is a fire at your place of work. Your boss tells you to hold open the front door so everybody can run to safety unobstructed. Now, that's your "other duty assigned". Keep with me here. Let's say "other duties assigned" was not in your job description. There's a fire and your boss tells you to hold open the door. You refuse because holding open doors is not in your job description. Everybody in the building dies a firey death. Then, the families of those people who died sue the company. Do you see where I'm going with this?

I'm not justifying the phrase, but it's actually there for a reason. The example I gave might be a little rediculous, but it is there to prove a point.

Some employers abuse this phrase. You could be a software engineer for a company, but the boss comes along and gives you a shovel to scoop up dog shit on the front lawn because in addition to your software engineering duties, you also have "other duties assigned" - in this case, picking up dog shit.

Could be worse - the psycho boss I've referred to once made my co-worker serve small claims court papers on his behalf because "it was on the way home for her."

I see your point but it just opens up the employee to a shit load of exploitation. If you are a programmer it should mean “and other programming duties assigned”. What if they wanted to get rid of someone wouldn’t it be easy to just give that person a task that he or she is totally not qualified for and then say that the person is unable to manage the task assigned. What happens to an employee who refuses to get the boss dry cleaning? Do they have grounds to fire this employee even though it was not the employee’s core function???

That used to be illegal in australia or you had to get paid the higher rate of pay but now with our idiotic prime minister and his new work place relations its just like you said.

Hi there JaVibes

Was almost on the verge of spitting at my director and his bitch assistant a couple of days ago because of this very particular lousy 'bomb' at the very end of the our 'enslavement' contract.

Sitting back in his chair, litting his pipe while speaking calmly and wondering why I should be so nervous, the executive 'bastard' told me in cold blood that this is a general wording used in all contracts worldwide.

Working as an assistant to his 'bitchy' assistant, whose sole interest is mainly kicking good people out of the way and gathering as much titles as she can, I have been assigned to the tasks which '2' employees used to be taking care of before the 'bitch' got the posts.

Raising one eye brow and smoking her cigarette with rage, she went like: 'but remember... your contract says: and any other tasks assigned by your supervisor."

Astonished as I was, I went like: 'does this mean that maybe tomorrow you will assign to me sweaping the workplace?'

Anyways, they have the guts to do it.

But just let them go do this with whoever would put up with them... I am out know.. just wish me good luck to finish my one month notice... cant stand more bastards and bitches!!
