College degree

What the fuck is with all these jobs expecting a 4 year degree? I've been spending the past few weeks looking for a new job in the networking field. I usually go to craigslist. Monster and career builder are a fucking joke to me.

It seems like the majority of these employers EXPECT me to have a AS or BS. Why? Does having a degree suddenly prove you KNOW the job? I'm self taught. I don't need a degree to prove shit. I never listed one of my resume. Yet it seems every now and then some nitwit dumb cocksucker job recruiter sends me a proposal and asks "do you have a degree?"

Did I list it on my resume? NO ASSHOLE! BECAUSE I DON'T FUCKING HAVE ONE!

Oh but it looks better? Sure, I'll go spend 2-4 years in college to learn WHAT I ALREADY KNOW, rack up a few more thousand dollars in debt, then hope that someone will hire me, because I have that degree.

College counselors are the fucking worst. "Look at how much more money you CAN be making with a degree over just a high school diploma! Well, yes you will have a few thousand dollars in debt hanging over your head, but once employers see that degree, the offers will roll in!"

BULLSHIT!

No, they forget to tell you that the degree doesn't mean a GOD DAMN THING, and once you graduate, interest on your loans begins almost immediately. And a degree guarantees NOTHING. They want people to sign up for classes so they make money.

I am just so damn sick of reading job ads wanting a bachelors degree for a $15 an hour job. If I were to get a 4 year degree (ain't gonna happen), $30 would be my minimum, but there is no way in hell I'm WASTING 4 years in college to re-learn what I've known for years.

Even better, the job is really the work of 3 people, but you only want to pay for one, and you still want the degree. Well, slavery was abolished years ago, but apparently you still believe in it.

I remember talking to a University of Phoenix dude (retired Marine) who apparently was a helicopter mechanic, but said nobody would hire him because he didn't have a degree, and he was trying to convince me to sign up for a degree based on his bullshit lie. Either he was a fucking liar, or he can't write a resume for FUCKING SHIT. How the fuck can you spend 20 years in the service, make rank, then not be able to get a decent civilian job? He is either dumb as fuck or can't write a resume. I told him this straight up. He didn't like that at all. Yes, the truth fucking hurts.

Fine employers, wait for someone with that degree, then realize it doesn't mean shit. Having a degree is not proof of competence.

Once you have that degree a lot of places see you as OVERqualified. What the hell is that about? It's a friggen bachelor's degree, not a damn doctorate in advanced nuclear physics of the declining surface area tension in the arctic regions (or some other useless crap like that!)

You need 3-5 years experience as well. Well FUCK! If nobody wants to hire me how do I get that extra experience in that area ?? (I have 5 years experience in something else that apparently doesn't count, even for jobs pertaining to that.) I would SETTLE for $15 an hour and even that's seen as my wanting "too much." God forbid I ever make enough to live on my own!

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Face it, the world sucks!

Yep, heard that one before. I had a call earlier this year for a job as a Unix administrator. My resume clearly shows 3 years on the job, even though I have several more years in personal experience. This fucking nitwit says "Hmmm I only see 3 years", and I told him I have more, and beside, YOU FUCKING CALLED ME ABOUT THE JOB ASSHOLE! Then he said the company is pretty hardcore about wanting 6-10 years. Then why in the nine hells did you call me when my resume shows what I have?

He recommended I keep checking their job board. Again asswipe, why the hell did you call me?

Yeah the overqualified is a crock of shit. I am set in my rate. There is a minimum I will take. I was asked if I wanted a job for $15 hour recently. The job supposedly was entry level, but I pointed out a few things in the description that were not entry, so I told the recruiter that if the wage goes up, count me in. Of course it won't.

I don't get real worked up over the 5+ years required. Fuck em. After the job has gone unfilled for MONTHS, the boss is eventually going to get the idea that either nobody has exactly what he wants, or he isn't paying enough. I just get fucking tired of every company thinking a degree proves you know your shit. Another reason is that if you could make it through 4 years of college, then you stick to something.

You have to stick to your guns when it comes to money. Remember, the employer wants the most qualified for NOTHING. If he could get you with a 4 year degree and pay you $9, he will. Fuck no! Decide how much you want, and don't go for anything less. He won't budge? Fine, then he can hire someone else who will do his shit for less.

Job Descriptions and Qualifications are all bullshit. Anyone here can tell you that. It's never about what you know, either. Politics - the way of Life; the way of the World.

But I also have to agree with the stick to the salary you want argument. Don't let them buy you for cheap!

If they could they would hire children at 5 years old to train and mold them to be their slaves so they can work for 8 dollars an hour. That's what McDonald's does. All they want to do is find people who are willing to work for NOTHING. I mean they hire people off the street who don't fucking know the difference between Microsoft Email servers and Bluetooth ( I swear to GOD that is what my fellow co-workers are like) and they would rather hire them, rather than people with a REAL BA degree, so that they can save a few dollars. That BA paper is only good for rolling up weed and smoking it!!!

I do have a degree but understand your plight. You hit the nail on the head.

I have a friend in Central Texas who experienced the same type of limitations. He literally taught himself about computers from the ground up. Ultimately he thumbed his nose the the Corporate world and created his own consultant business. Now he has 12 employees, a killer office, and makes 150 an hour to assist companies with tech snafus.

Do not let money stand in your way. He literally had zero money and started his business out of the trunk of his car. He did some pro bono type work with 1-2 companies provided that he could use them as references. From there he was able to say-I currently consult with x and y. Once this was established he was off to the races.

If you are a tech wiz then realize that you have a gift and make some duckets. With a bit of creativity and hard work the sky is the limit. Fuck the big companies you are better than that. Go out there and kick some ass and build yor own empire.

Respectfully,
Big Dog
