A Christmas CarolOkay, yeah, so the holidays are over, but I got thinking about it. Shitty boss, working your fingers to the bone for him or her, and crappy, crappy pay with little or no appreciation. Wow! Working today for most people so much resembles a working Bob Crachit of a story so long ago written that it's scary! And for some people, trying to give the boss a little bit of enthusiasm or sense of caring (i.e. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or even a Good morning) is responded to with the same old criticism, lack of joy, or the same level of disparity - hope that word is right - with a big ol' "Bah Humbug!", which I think, quite possibly, is yesterday's version of today's "Fuck you!" (or at least that kind of attitude you get from your boss with any semblence of civility you try to show them.) So basically what does this tell us? Most bosses don't get visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future (or maybe in their case it should be Ghosts of Managing Past, Present, and Future - I can practically imagine us all dancing around singing,"Thank you very much! Thank you very much!" at the leaving of our crappy bosses through the visions of Managing Future!)therefore, neither do they have a magical change of heart after seeing the error of their ways and bestowing great wealth (Wow! what would that be like?!)upon the people (you and me) who have done all the shit work for them day after dreary day, month after morbid month, year after crappy year! Hence, since this hasn't and won't happen - nothing has changed! Decades and decades and decades...and nothing whatsoever has changed. It's the same drudgery, the same crap, day after day after day, with little or no recognition, decent compensation, or even semi-humane treatment from these assholes that are our bosses. It's amazing that I could so easily apply my work life to Crachit's. The work part of the story is almost like the subplot of the story that wasn't meant to be, but showed up anyway. ...I wonder what sort of job, escape, or Christmas visitation to our bosses it'll take for yours or mine to have a happy ending. |
