Dignity or Paycheck?

As many of you know, I am the victim of a pre-emptive firing. My boss tells me he wants me to leave 60 days from now. Essentially, I am a dead man walking.

Its day 2 of 60 right now, and the tension in the office is stifling. Its so humiliating knowing that you are fired, you have no chance of redeeming yourself, but yet your bosses STILL control you. Yet, that alarm clock STILL goes off at 6am. Yet, they STILL give you stupid shit to do.

Granted, I am still getting a fat paycheck.. but at the cost of my dignity? Have I just put a price on my dignity?

Obviously, my mind has mentally shut off. I no longer have any value/future here, so why should I even give 1/2 a shit?

To add insult to injury, my boss refuses to recommend me in good faith to another department in the company. He won't even do me that one favor. So, I am officially finished with this company.

But here I am, in this same cubicle, typing on this same keyboard, interacting with the same people.. even though I'm fired.

How fucked up is that? I should just fucking leave right now, or put in my 2 weeks. I can't even entertain the thought of being here for 2 weeks, let alone 2 months! My God.

So what should I do? Should I stick it out, solely for the money and the opportunity to look for a job while employed?

OR

Should I just say "fuck it" and bounce? Take my ass and my dignity with me, hold my head high, and never look back.

What do I do?

How bad do you need the money? I think the uncomfortable truth is we sell our dignity the day we start*. "They say jump you say how high" thats how it is but since you're already fired you can give him the finger.

It all depends how bad its making you feel, your health is your responsiblity.

*most employed people at least

Tell them to go fuck themselves and walk out NOW. It depends how much you need the money. If you're not going to be homeless or that desperate, then there's no reason to put up with that shit.

Take your two weeks pay, dignity and BOUNCE!!! you will regret it, if you don't.. believe me. At least at your next job interview, you can say (WITH pride) "it just wasn't working out, so I put in my two weeks"
there is also the possibility that your managers will start treating your like crap *if they're not, already* because, like what are you gonna do? quit?

I know how you feel. Two months of that crap will be hard to deal with. Believe me, I know how bad you feel. I was in a similar situation in 2004 and I left...I didn't stay even though I badly needed the money. I had less than $2500 in the bank and was living in San Francisco...a very expensive city. So here's what I did: I left the company and my expensive apartment and moved into the ghetto where rent was $400 per month for a tiny bedroom in shitty house with roomates. Although I was ashamed to show people where I lived, I was happier not going into work. I eventually started a small business and believe me, not having a boss is like having a piece of heaven.

So here's my advice to you and it's not to quit and move into the ghetto: If you need the money, just stay and save as much as you can. I know it will be hard, but it's harder to be homeless. And give those 60 days your BEST SHOT. Be the BEST that you can be so that when you leave, THEY WILL MISS YOU AND KNOW WHO YOU REALLY ARE. Just because you are leaving in 60 days, that doesn't mean that you're inferior or less intelligent or less capable. It just means that your boss didn't like you for some reason and you cannot really control that...so just give it your best. Don't worry about your co-workers. The ones who judge you are not worth being friends with, and believe me, you do have co-workers who don't view you any differently and wish you happiness. By the way, if you give it your best over 60 days, your boss might want to keep you. And if you don't want to stay, then I'm sure he'll give you the reference letter. Just let of the negativity and do what needs to be done.

If you don't need the money, and you don't want to give it your best shot, then leave.

If you're like me and have trouble working for others, than go and start a business. If you have $20k-$50k sitting around in the bank or can borrow it from friends, then I would advise you spend it as a down payment that will allow you to go and buy a small business...even a laundromat or a corner store. You'll be your own boss and you won't have to take shit from anybody. You'll make far less money at first, but you'll be far far happier and if you have the heart of an entrepreneur, then you will find a way to grow your business and eventually, the money will be coming in.

I hope my advice has helped you.

PS - Two years after being fired, my business was moving along pretty strong and I almost hired my old boss (who fired me) to sub-contract for me. I interviewed him and didn't give him the job!

I would stay for the money but I would do absoutely no work...or as little work as possible. They told you your out in 60 days, and they expect you to be happy...if they still expect the best out of you, show them they have another thing coming. They sound stupid as all hell. If they let you go earlier, let them. I hope you find something much better soon.

Losing your job always sucks, but it comes with a sense of liberation. It can make you wallow in self-pity, or look to the future.

hey man, listen, he isn't firing you, he is PROMOTING you- obviously they think you are too good for them, they might feel like you are getting ready to leave anyways and they want to make the first move. i think that's what happened at target with me- they knew i was better than fucking 750 an hour (6.19 a nhour after taxes) so they wouldnt promote me but they wont fire anyone unless they are caught stealing. so in a way, i was flattered and u should be too. right now, make the money, save the money and start looking cause like with women- when u have a gf u have so many other girls wanting u and its easier to get a job when u have one already! so congrats mate! celebrate! its a new beginning!

I'm in a very similar position. I have 4 to 6 weeks left in this job and then I have to go. The most frustrating part is however that I wasn't fired but instead my boss decides that after 4 months of me being here he needs somebody to manage the entire company instead of the office! I mean wtf?! Couldn't he have made this decision or come to this conclusion before he hired me and wasted my fucking time! It is absolutely PAINFUL to come in here every day full well knowing that I'm not staying and everything I do just seems pointless. And then if I feel like I'm not doing my job properly still I feel like I'm losing my motivation and dignity. The sad part is that I really don't want to leave and I certainly don't want to stay here for up to 6 weeks which I consider absolutely pointless and cruel. I think you should start looking for a new job straight away, really hype yourself up and attend interviews with a "fuck them it's their loss" attitude which is what I think I will end up doing. You have to show those assholes that you don't depend on their crappy job and that you can do better for yourself.
