Pregnant and No Insurance

I have been working as a Graphic Designer for 3 years and my job has to be one of the worst jobs. I graduated from the University at Buffalo with Honors and had high hopes of landing a great job after college. Instead, I got stuck here after college. My boss is so cheap I have to buy my own office supplies and garbage bags while he goes on exotic vacations and buys all kinds of pricy things. There are exhaust fumes that come up through the vent and I get dizzy. The windows have a horrible draft coming through them and my hands are alwasy freezing.

The compnay is only made up of 4 employees (including myself) and I dream of working for a big corporation with perks and insurance.

There aren't many media jobs here so it has been hard finding another job and I wonder if my boss is saying bad things about me so no one else will hire me.

I just found out I was pregnant and what a surprise my job does not have health insurance and never has. My bosses advice was to "go on Medicaid". However, I made too much money to go on Medicaid. I made $23,000 this year which really isn't much but I guess it is too much to qualify. Now I am stuck in a horrible place with no insurance and pregnant. Anyone out there with a similar situation?

Buy anything for you to do your job...no office supplies...nada. That is the boss/owners responsibility.

I found this helpful http://www.americanpregnancy.org/planningandpreparing/affordablehealthcare.html

There should be a free clinic in town and even though we generally think that these places are just for super poor people, they are not. They are for everyone. In the least they will at least give you free prenatal vitamins which are very important. If they turn you away (sometimes happens but shouldn't) then you can visit a minute clinic. Just check online for one in your area. They are usually in Targets and Grocery stores. They cost like $50/visit (way less then the doctor) and they give you free samples etc. These clinic are only staffed with nurse practitioners not doctors but these women are smart and well qualified to help you.

If you are not taking prenatal vitamins you need to pick up at least a multivitamin with these ingredients or take extra vitamin A, Folic Acid, and Calcium vitamins:

4,000 and 5,000 IU (international units) of vitamin A
800 and 1,000 mcg (1 mg) of folic acid
400 IU of vitamin D
200 to 300 mg of calcium
70 mg of vitamin C
1.5 mg of thiamine
1.6 mg of riboflavin
2.6 mg of pyridoxine
17 mg of niacinamide
2.2 mcg of vitamin B-12
10 mg of vitamin E
15 mg of zinc
30 mg of iron

I understand about the no insurance issues...the cheap ass place (a church) doesnt care enuf about their employees (just the pastor) to care whether they have insurance or not..but don't think the high class people that attend here dont have insurance..well anyway I buy my own insurance (it's a high deductable, but in case something would happen, I need a little piece of mind)I pay around $75.00 a month, but I also use free when I can (flu shots, dental clinic..etc...

seriously I do web/graphic design in my spare time for companies as a sideline and 23k a year is NOT enough for that profession. It also doesn't help that there's no insurance perks and you have to supply yourself with equipment to work for somebody else. There has to be something better for you out there, have you considered relocating? Or maybe looking at companies that would need a graphic designer such as newspapers, advertising agencies, etc.?
