I did it and I'm glad

This is something I did years ago that made me very happy.

I used to work in a place even worse than the one I am in now. If I told you about the cartoon character psyche ward escapees who worked there you would not believe me.

Anyway, there was a woman who worked there who hated everyone even more than I did. She used to have a good cry every morning before she came to work. She worked in administration so she handled everyone’s paperwork, including her own.

One day she had had enough. She started writing her paperwork to leave without telling anyone. This was a federal government job and it takes tons of paper to get in and out of those jobs. She told no one but me that she was leaving.

We agreed that we would both ask for half a day of leave. We would leave at noon on Friday. When Friday came we both took off telling everyone we were going to lunch. She had quietly cleaned out her desk and had walked all her paperwork through the day before. In the government, if you want to leave the job through conventional methods it takes two weeks. Your paperwork goes from desk to desk. FYI it’s better to carry it through all the offices of personnel management yourself and get the dozen or so signatures you need in person.

So. As I was saying; we left for lunch that day. We went to Red Lobster and ate and drank and laughed as long as we wanted to. She found a FAX machine and FAXed in her resignation. We spent the rest of the day together. In the afternoon we said, “Good by” to one another. She dropped me off and went home to start packing for Carolina.

When Monday came people started asking where she was. You know: all those asses who she hated. I hemmed and hawed. Everyone knew I was the last one to see her. When Tuesday came they started to get suspicious. As much as she hated the people, she was dedicated to her work and was never absent. When Wednesday came they knew. They asked me if she was gone and I said yes.

She forbade me to tell her e-mail address new home address or new phone number. Everyone now wanted to reach her but only I had the secret. She finally gave me permission after she had found a new job. She was very happy up until her death.

About a year later (she was still alive then) I had also had enough when it got so bad that I started putting in formal complaints of harassment and nothing was done. I contacted my friend and asked her what to do. She told me what papers I needed, who to talk to and who to avoid. I started cleaning out my desk. By the time they got my FAXed resignation I was long gone.

It makes me feel good just to think about it.

Ducking out silently is the best way to go. Let all those dickheads you leave behind wonder why and how and when and all that marvelous shit their pea-brains can cook up.
