Do Lamps Need Lightbulbs?

My job is ok, I mean its retail so it sucks, but this company sucks less than a lot of the other ones I've worked for. What makes working with the general public so difficult and hence, what makes me hate this job, is the insanely stupid things that come out of people's mouths.

I am so tired of repeating myself to people; how many times can I say "No, we don't have it in stock" to the same person before they will believe me or before I am legally allowed to slug them. Its worse when there is already a giant sign on the rack which already tells them the items are on sale, but they still ask if its on sale and the proceed to ask if each separate color, size, or logo is included in the sale.

Repeat after me...Yes, the whole rack is on sale. Yes, the whole rack is on sale. Yes, the whole rack is on sale.

A woman was looking at a table lamp today. Granted, it was an unusual design, but I thought the light socket and the electrical cord would be a dead give away to what it was. Hmmm, light socket = light! But no, she had to ask me what it was. That's fine, she wasn't the first. But when she asked me if she had to put a light bulb in it to make it work, I just had to walk away. Yes, lamps need light bulbs.

This goes on day in and day out. When did people cease to think for themselves? I have one woman who came in to look at action figure toys and demanded "What do they do?" She refused to purchase to toy when I told her that "They don't do anything, the child gets to use his imagination." God-forbide the kid had to think for himself!!

And please, someone tell me ... Why are parent so outraged that we have our school supplies in already for an event that starts in 4 weeks, but equally pissed off that we don't have our Halloween costumes in for an event that starts in three months? They whine it's too early for school supplies but tell me it's stupid that costumes aren't in yet. WTF?

I remember when I worked in retail. This blog just reminded me that I used to think there was no hope for humans. You can get that way easily dealing with the public.

Here's a quote for you that works for me "You can't make a new beginning, but you can make a new ENDING"

Keep trying to find something. Don't give up.

After the lady and the light bulb episode, I went home and got out the college catalog. I appyling for paralegal certification courses tomorrow. Should have done it 20 years ago! I'm probably qualified to do a million things, but all people see on the resume is retail manager. Here's to new endings!

This only confirms my belief that most people aren't very sharp at all.

I hate to say it, but quite a lot of people/customers are dumb fucks. Yes I have done the retail biz in my present life......fun fun fun.......just pretend you are deaf, and start making some sign language signals and they will leave you alone. Works every time.
