Take a pay cut?I came across a job ad today for an admin assistant with an engineering firm. It's the kind of position where they require you to do many different things. I think it would be a good match with the skills that I have. This is the kind of position I'm looking for. However, I'm guessing that I won't make as much $$$$$$. How important is money in the long run anyways? I fucking hate my job and spend about as much time procrastinating than working. My job is not stressful but the bulk of my responsibilities suck. I do not really produce anything and I feel like I'm running around in circles. I'm basically expected to produce results but everything is out of my hands. It's very strange. Anyways, I fucking hate it. I hate the people that whine to me about their problems and I hate the people in upper management who play mind games. This is a large organization that employs many different types of people so you'll encouter all sorts. Anyhow, should I risk taking a job that pays less if it would make me happy? The problem I have is that I just bought a house with my S/O and he doesn't really see my point of view. He thinks I should be happy where I am because I make decent money. It's easy for him to say this because he's been working at the same place for seven years without too many issues. If I was single, I'd kiss this place goodbye in a second. Another positive point about this job is that it's a five min walk from my house. Right now I have to take two buses to get to work. It takes about 1/2 hour. Doesn't sound like much but if I could walk to work in 5 mins, that would be awesome. My carbon footprint would be much lower. Advice please. Life can be hell when you can't meet your bills. I think you should do whatever makes you happy. You'll be saving some money not having to take two buses to work. I think you can ajust to making less money, just make sure you make enough money to cover your share of the bills. Being in a job with a lot of office politics can be stressful, but to me, not being able to meet your needs is even more stressful. That's my opinion. I've experienced both! I was a recent graduate when i started working for a large corporation. The salary was great and the work was definately challenging. The only thing that i dreaded that place the most was the environment. I mean...a few of the people that worked there really got under my skin...up to a point where I was just miserable. So I quit and found another job that pays 50% less than what I got at my prior company. The pay sucks, but I feel a lot happier now that I don't have to put up with so much bullshit. I think you should do what makes you happy b/c life is short and you don't want to waste away your time doing things you don't enjoy. I've been looking for a job since May of this year and so far nada. It seems that every job that "looks like it might something interesting" like the one you mentioned pays much less. I think high paying jobs are diminishing faster than George Bush's fan club in general. A trend we may have to deal with. So I'm working on ways I can get by with less money and then go after some of those interesting jobs. Yes, money can be good, but stress is not worth it, unless you are getting paid millions. Fuck it, take the pay cut, be happy, hopefully the job is close to your home. Cut your expenses to be the same or lower than your pay( so you can save for emergencies). Yes, it will take getting used to, but it can be done. Stop buying take out/eating out, carpool, stop using credit cards(pay them off too) get a roommate, shut off the cable, get rid of netflix(rent movies for free at the library) and get a prepaid cell instead of a monthly program, stop buying useless shit you don't need or have space to put anyways. Sell some old stuff you no longer need. Raise the deductible on your car, if you have one, to cut the insurance bill, and also shop around for the best rate, etc etc etc. There are always ways to cut bills, if you make less. Most people are just natural spenders (helped by slick advertising), so this may be very hard for them to do. Wally |
