I can hear the whispers...Right now, I can hear the president and my supervisor whispering about me in the next office. They have to whisper because I share a wall with my supervisor's office and he knows that sound travels well. I think they are contemplating how to fill my role with someone else who will ask for less money. I think this is happening because I clearly cannot hide the fact that I am dissatisfied with this job anymore. I notice that I have a sharp edge to my communication, and my supervisor has been backing down from our conversations to spare an argument. But FUCK IT ALREADY. I cannot believe I haven't found a job in 2 of the 3 years I've been working here, and I am just totally drained on this job. I want so badly to barge in on their whisper fest and calmly say, "Hello gentlemen, I wanted to let you both know that I am officially giving my two-weeks notice today." I wish I could follow it up by saying that their competitor hired me or some big name silicon valley fortune 500 company snapped me up for twice what they're paying me now... This is total bullshit!!!!! I know what will happen next too because it happens after every closed-door whisper fest. My supervisor will come into my office, talk to me like I'm one of his children, and I'll have to hold my chin up and blink back the tears. I'll fold my hands in my lap so that I don't grab the nearest blunt object and impulsively chuck it at his head. Then, I'll have to go for a walk so that I can sob without being bothered. Finally, I'll return and hit all the job boards again, seeking employment, check my email a dozen times an hour for some nugget of a response, and sit in misery until the end of today. All the while, the main employees of this corporation will get paid out the wazoo to do the technical work they do. I'm too fucking tired for this... You might want to consider relocating if you can't find work in your field in 2 years of looking. It sounds like they may can you. I've heard those conversations before and they usually mean that they're going to fire someone. No meaning to be blunt but they're up to something. You left me the most wonderful comment on my blog posting "The Wasteland," and I just wanted to reply with a heartfelt THANK YOU! It was the sweetest reply and best advice I've probably ever gotten around here and made me weep even more (but good weeping, that time). Things still suck (imagine!), but I have taken your advice to bring something good to work to focus on (I plan on trying to cookie idea out later, today I brought my husband. Seriously. He's doing temp work and knowing he's around to have lunch with me has already made my day better). So...I just wanted to express my gratitude for your understanding and kind, helpful words (god, I'm getting misty just thinking about it...). Am also wondering how things are going with you job after all that cowardly whispering and whatnot. I of course have my finger crossed for you finding something new and better, where you're far more appreciated. My husband and I are located near Silicon Valley and it definitely seems like jobs are in short supply around here lately. He's been looking since June and despite some great interviews, no bites. I wish I had more to say about this, other than hang in there, all the karma you've been storing up by sticking with these asshole employers has got to pay off sometime. - PWADJ |
