I wish I had a job to hate......I wish I had a job to hate. Let me explain how I got here..... When I was 18, very young, sheltered, and naive, I decided to major in Elementary Education and English. I got a job out of college and taught for 5 years. Each year I found it more stressful and unsatisfying, and everyone says if you don't like what you're doing, find something else to do. So....at the end of my 5th year I took a course in Central Office Installation in the Telecommunications field. The work was enjoyable and the pay was good, but the industry came to a complete stand-still around 2000, and I could not get back in. Yes, I tried. Very diligently and determinedly. Also, I'm not one who thinks the world is against me because I'm female, but in that industry, I sometimes wondered. All the other women I worked with were either someone's wife or girlfriend who was already working there. Okay....I accepted that door as closed, subbed and worked a part-time job in the evenings. I also moved to a different area where there were more jobs. I enrolled in a Tech school that was licensed by the State and bonded. I took out a loan to pay the tuition. Three weeks into my classes the school declared bankruptcy and closed. The bond money was insufficient to cover all of us students, and we had to get a lawyer. Our lawyer got us to the State Attorney General, who did get our loan amounts reduced. However, I still have a balance to repay, and it is strapping me. I worked in childcare for a while, thinking it would be temporary while I looked for something else. Unfortunately, it was very low paying and over-regulated, so I got out of it. Now I have a resume that has a patchy history and can't seem to get a full-time job. I'm either told that I'm over or underqualified, or don't have that specific skill set. It's frustrating. I can type, use Microsoft Office, answer a phone, perform customer service, and a variety of things. Yes, I network, but it hasn't netted anything for me. I am currently subbing, cleaning for a lady who has her own cleaning business, and waitressing at a Countryclub. I am staying afloat, but this is not how I want to spend the rest of my life. Thanks for reading this. I just wanted to get it out of my system. Just hear me out... I do a lot of recruiting and hiring in my job (funny, I thought I was in MARKETING, but that's how my job abuses me), and I can tell you that you would be great for an admin position somewhere. It's a start, and can turn into an office manager, sales, or marketing role for you, if that's what you like. Plus, the pay is much higher than anything else you've been naming. I would notice the spotty work history on some resumes, but that wasn't why we hired who we hired. The gal we hired put together a lovely cover letter--great flow, briefly highlighted her skills, and explained why she thought she might be a good fit for the role. Most of the applicants could barely spell their names, and one applicant put that she held the position of 'Administrative Assasinate' at her last job... My point is, maybe you should give the admin or executive assistant avenue a try. Your writing skills are great (from what I can see), and you do have a degree. My 2 cents... good luck! f8_smyled |
