Advice

OK, my last post for the day...provided people leave me alone...

I need some advice. I'm now actively seeking a new job. This is the first real job I've had since taking a 3 year hiatus to attend graduate school, so I'm compelled to use my current boss(es) for references.

Do I tell them I'm actively seek employment elsewhere or wait until someone calls looking for a reference?

What you have you all done in the past? This is a new one on me. Usually I quit because I'm moving.

Thanks,
PWADJ

...that you're seeking employment because they'll shitcan you. It would be great if we could be totally honest with our employers and tell them that we are looking for employment.

Well, maybe your bosses wouldn't mind if you told them, but mine would. I am seeking employment, and I know that if I told them I was, they'd fire me the next day. I'm using a coworker as a reference so I don't have to bother with it.

If you need them to be your reference because you lack other employment experience, then maybe you should approach them and tell them you're seeking employment--you'd have to be the judge of that because I think most employers would then fire you if you told them you were trying to leave. Maybe your employers will understand...

I'm inclined to agree - thanks for your input.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't can me only because they need me and our organization makes it more or less impossible to fire someone unless they break a law or code of ethics.

Nonetheless, I don't feel like telling them. I'm thinking that I'll only tell them if I get an interview and know for sure they will be contacted.

In an ideal world, their only warning would be my two weeks, fuck you very much, notice.

Feel them out to get a sense what they will say if your future prospect employer calls them.

Good luck.

I wouldn't say anything. They might throw you out the door.

Never tell them that you are leaving. Why give them the green light to treat you even worse then they already do. I've even experienced an employer treating me like crap because I gave my two week notice. I ended up just staying 3 days of the two weeks because I didn't need the extra BS. The two weeks are a courtesy and not if they don't want you to extend the courtesy then screw em.
