Thank goodness for that college degree!I just had a great idea for a new business: I'll start a seminar for High School seniors where I explain to them what college is actually like. Your classes will be taught by disinterested and often unqualified professors who CANNOT BE FIRED FOR ANY REASON EVER. The only time the school will acknowledge you as a human being is when they think you owe them money. Conveniently, charges will magically appear on your account right around the time you need to register for classes every single semester. This will keep you from registering for the classes you need, if they're even offered. Did you know that colleges don't actually offer the classes you need every semester? Nope. They only offer that class you need to graduate in the winter...every third year. And then you graduate with that degree. Probably not feeling pride...more like defeat. You just wasted all that money. You know what you've learned--Nothing at all. You're now heavily in debt, but hey, at least you've got that degree and can get a "real" job now. And you look, and you look, and after a while you realize that all the job listings are the same. Week after week after week. It's the same jobs being advertised all the time. The fact that they can't fill these positions should tell you something about the quality of the work. Soon you realize that the advice "Study what you're interested in" is a complete load of shit. That liberal arts degree qualifies you for Data Entry or...being a manual laborer. Only if you can pass a dehumanizing drug test though! Don't forget, you're a criminal to your company until you prove otherwise by providing bodily fluids. God bless America! And so now I'm unemployed. Been out of college for three months and haven't come close to employment. Every week is the same "administrative assistant" job listing repeated over and over again. Or I could be an underpaid retail employee working alongside teenagers, the elderly, and the mentally infirm. Just like being in High School again! So really, since a college degree does nothing to help with job hunting (there are no decent jobs out there to hunt for), why the fuck did I waste 7 years and thousands and thousands of dollars getting a fucking worthless college degree? Right. Because everyone tells you that you have to have a degree. This is a lie. This is a lie perpetuated by universities who don't give two shits about anything but your money. They'll use that money to raise administrator salaries, put plasma TV's in the library and try to make the campus look like a fun party zone in order to attract the students who don't give a shit about learning anything and are more likely to fail and retake (and pay for) the same class multiple times. Universities in America are no better than corporations. And most universities are sponsored by at least one gigantic corporation. Student loans will be coming due before too long. No jobs in the area and a degree that is not nearly as useful as the lies people tell about it. Fucking awesome situation. I really hope the number of college graduates takes a sharp dive soon because those fucking universities don't deserve one more goddamn cent of money from anyone. Not until they start focusing on knowledge rather than being fucking corporate cock-sucking whores. I agree...college is one big lie being told to the young people today...ive been a college graduate for almost three years, and all ive managed to get are pointless data entry and other pointless positions..oh sure ive interviewed for other jobs, but all of those are the most soul destroying pieces of crap i have ever heard of... Universities need to be held to the same standards as other businesses who sell products, and be told to give warranties.... if the customer demands his money back after a certain amount of time and the warranty is still in place, the business usually gives the money back. Not so with colleges, and it should be done. Seriously, every time I think of the money wasted on college it makes me want to puke. What do I qualify for? Nothing! I don't have experience, so even if I get an interview (for something DECENT) and they ask me where I've applied certain stuff I've learned in college in a work environment I have to say, well, I haven't. I have experience in a few other things, but nothing that anybody is interested in (except crap jobs, and I could've gotten those WITHOUT my degree). And even "Entry Level" positions want this 1-2 years experience crap. And is it location? I don't think so. I've moved - and it's the same kind of crappy jobs being offered. Every time I hear old ladies talking to younger kids about degrees, and they hear what mine is in I tell them the truth: It's worthless and I wouldn't recommend that ANYONE go to college. They look appalled because their precious (grand)children are sitting there and back in the day college was "oh so great". Screw that! I'm just telling them the truth lady! College my ass. What a waste of time. have to agree with you. I have no marketable skills (three degrees later, associates - master's, and I'm still working a shitty office job). The latest trend seems to be to funnel people through colleges and universities, whether or not they should even be there. Some aren't ready - they can barely grasp the basics - and some just aren't interested in reading literature and taking bullshit classes. Education just isn't for everyone. And it's fucking expensive. Here's hoping the skyrocketing costs eventually piss enough people off to reconsider the benefit of higher education. Apprenticeships were a great idea - what the hell happened to those? Learn a trade/skill from an expert by helping him or her and eventually do their job - sounds logical to me. Anyway, sorry you're having such trouble, my husband is in the same situation - he's a recent grad who's been looking since June. A dozen good interviews later and still nothing. I hope you find something soon. - PWADJ I have a masters in computer science and have a pretty decent job, but if I had to change jobs I am not completely certain I could find one with out a substantial pay cut. If I were graduating high school again and considering going for a degree to get some bucks I am not sure what is hot now. I don't think IT is the way to go, but maybe it still is; I wonder what the hot skill set for 2007/2008 is? Mr. Plankton ....that may get you a good job(if you're a cute female). Hookers/Escorts make a ton of money(no college or any education required). I think the skill set for 2007/2008 is a nice body and a boob job. Probably a better investment than any shitty college degree. Wally i disagree with this school of thought. of COURSE degrees are powerful, but it depends on what your field of study is. no one on this board ever says what they actually majored in. and you have to be reasonable. if your major within the humanities, you have to understand that although you can tailor a career to your desires, your pay wont be as great as, say, a med school or electrical engineering graduate. like Mr. Plankton, if i had 10-13 years back to do it all over again, i would got a different route, and get all the work experience i could through school. who cares about an A+ average-- lower Bs are fine...as long as you get those important co-ops and internships. just my 2 centavos. I first came to this site bitching about my worthless college degrees and how the university system keeps feeding its tireless jaws with new shiny-eyed high-schoolers whose grandmothers told them they expected them to be college graduates! The curve of experience vs. degree has changed in the last 20-30 years. You need a BS to bag groceries nowadays, and the MS or PhD top candidates for the good jobs are from the old school of apprenticeship-type work, where they learned hands-on how to tackle the responsibilities of their preferred job. Instead of improving the college experience to include that hands-on knowledge, they've become crafty at getting your money faster. The whole thing is streamlined--you can have your BS, or MS within 2 years. 2 years? Now, we aren't talking about the doctors and lawyers, but almost the engineers, specifically software, electrical, mechanical, etc. Tell me exactly how much experience can you have if you graduated from college through an online course in 2 years or less? I struggled through 6 fucking years of college. I studied Mass Communications so that my job options would be open--advertising, marketing, journalism, broadcasting, photojournalism, etc. EVERYONE I knew held me up while I pushed on year after year, thousands of dollars thrown at universities, sleepless nights putting in homework time and battling departmental politics--that last part mostly as a graduate student. They all said it would be so worth it, and I was so smart for getting it done and over with, well, WTF? Now, I'm in this goddamn job that I hate, interviewing for 2 years without any good offers, scraping by paycheck to paycheck, while my company hires kids that are barely out of their diapers at TWICE what I'm being paid because they have technical knowledge and I am merely a marketer. I honestly don't know what I would do if I could go back and try again. I think I would probably go into biogenetic agriculture or something--hell, we all have to eat--agriculture is the best commodity market ever! Plus, I'd get to live away from a city, where I can have some space and fresh air. It's just good validation to know that there are other people in my similar situation. f8_smyled Colleges these days are like everyone else - they're in it for the $. In CA where I lived, great schools like Stanford or Berzerkely only took foreign students because foreign tutition is way higher than for U.S. students. Plus most colleges today have commies running them and they want to see Americans fail. I have a sister who got a 4.5 GPA from the private high school she went to and she was denied admission to Berzerkely because she was white and a U.S. citizen. Meanwhile the Chinindians are flooding in here and getting the best education and then leaving and going back and building up their own countries. Real good for America all you fucktard politicians who want more immigration! We need laws saying American schools MUST take American kids before all others. If there are no slots left, then let the fucking Chindians go back to fucking Xinhua U. in Be-fucking-jing and study their asses off there. Maybe they can come up with their own way to create jobs there in their fucking great universities instead of coming to the U.S. and stealing our educational system. College degrees are worthless today. The only way to go is to make yourself more productive than anyone else - so much more productive that no one can compete with you. I never finished college but worked 16 hours a day for 15 years and produced 18 successful products in my field. Now my resume is so golden, no one on planet earth can touch me. Too bad for all the lazy shits who studied their asses off getting PhDs but who can't ship a product. TOO FUCKING BAD FOR THEM! That's why I couldn't go to U of M, not like I wanted to pay 25K a year even if I got in because I wasn't exactly a 4.0 student, but not a moron-factory fucktard either... I already lost enough money to MSU and they were a Big 10 bargain at 15K a year with housing and food. I see way too many book smart toddlers fresh out of college driving up the entrance requirements for jobs I NEED to go back to college and driving down the pay for everything else because a lot of them are the same crowd Tandoori mentioned that think 30K USD is a lot of money because they're too used to their fucking Chindian family living on 3 grand a year turd-farming or wage-dying while they grew up and then had WAY too much aid literally thrown at them by our schools. I agree that American students need to come first, but we're getting so stupid that we bought the "You can do it on 80 grand in student loans" lie just like we bought the "You can own a 300K house making $8-12/hr on an adjustable-rate mortgage" lie. Congratulations, we live in the greatest house of fucking cards ever put together in history and it's one Chindian currency adjustment away from falling down. I really hope Bush Incorporated gets the nukes flying soon, because I'd rather go out quickly than die in the second Great Depression... Keep it evil. Slam! Can't touch this, we rule it with a clenched fist, Run, hide, your time is coming Talk your shit, and get some balls to back it Run, hide, your time is coming Just like a storm rolling over, Warhead, payback, settle the score Run hide, your time is coming, (Hellyeah: Matter of Time) Friends....truth be told... unless you go to one of the TOP Ivy League schools and get to know kids of rich(aka influential) folks who can actually have some "pull" to get you the dream job/career, you are basically scammed and fucked by the USA college system. They take you to the fucking cleaners, turn you upside down and scam all your money on overpriced books, dorm rooms, and shitty fat and pesticide laden food. Maybe vocational schools have better use, such as mechanic or something, but the normal run of the mill college(junior or otherwise)/university is a total waste of fucking time and money. Too bad I figured it out after doing it, but lucky for me only wasted 4 years(and still have a shitty job I could have gotten right out of high school). Getting into a good position requires you KNOW PEOPLE, and that is what Ivy League schools do...... get you the proper contacts. Say you are roommate with some kid whose dad is a fucking CEO or some other top fuck brass of some company.....you know the kid, hang out, bla bla...you gradudate, and you got a job.......that otherwise you would never even fucking get. Get my drift? CONTACTS, and good ones is the only shit that counts. Fuck the wasted time in college, what kind of fucking grades you got or even if you fucking learned anything.....because it's nice and dandy except it't totally fucking useless out here in the work world. Contacts and kissing ass is what counts. Get to know people, the right kind of people, and you will get a career not a fucking shitty job, without as much as filling out a shitty ass application asking for everything and your shoe size. Nobody leaves a good position(well, unless they die or something). So get to read the obituaries too, and find out where those folks live and work, then go apply there. Start hanging out at bars and night club type places, meet people, talk to people, find the right kind of people..... otherwise it's just a fucking meat grinder, you work, you spend, back to fucking square #1 on Monday morning. It's fucked up, I know..... I should write a book on this....but this is the truth. Wally |
