Govt/Federal jobs?

Can anyone give me pros/cons for working in the govt.? I have an offer, it seems good but I thought I would ask.
Thanks.

The pay is a little light, offset by incredible benefits that include those things that other employers have long since forgotten about including: retirement (yes private sector, employees need to retire), health insurance that is affordable (Again provate sector that screws us), time off without having to quit your job, employers that have reasonable personalities, and generally safe work consitions unless you are in the military right now.
If you have an offer from the gov't, Jesus, leap into it even if it means losing everything you have.

I just had a run in with one of the girls at my work. The good part is, I'm getting used to it. The bad part is, I'm getting used to it. I fucking hate the private sector. we have to endure this abuse until we get the hell out of here!!!

The pay is the same as what I make now. I will bring home more money because the insurance is going to cost me less, 300.00 less a month. Yes, I was told about a pension thing, omg, I never ever thought I would ever have that. The thing that sold me though was, when I logged into this site, I noticed I have been a member for over 2 years! Thank you for answering tearful, I am very happy about this, I will take this job.

Congratulations! This sounds like a great job, good for you and good luck to you. A Pension and affordable insurance, that is amazing. I am very happy for you.

I still have to think "did the offer really happen?". I hope things come through for you guys here too.
fyi: I found the position on Usajobs.com. It is a site for govt jobs. You select the area you want to work and your areas of interest and they send e-mails with openings each week or so. From when I applied until the offer, it took 5 months so you have to be patient. I am glad I did it.

what type of job is it? federal? will it require relocation?

Yes, federal. I do have to move because the owner of the company where I am now owns the house I live in. Which brings me to the sad part, I am dreading telling him I am leaving. He is great to work for, it is the bunch of clowns he has in management that make this place a living hell. Yep, clown shoes, noses, pants, hair and hats.

i was asking because i wondered if it meant relocating to DC. THEN it would become an entirely different issue for you.

it sounds like you are sold on the job. based on the advice of other people, it seems like this is a golden opportunity. good luck! and congratulations!

pros
* flexiplace
* did I say flexiplace
* yearly pay increase
* comming off comercial, there is low exepctation in gov
* flexiplace
* depending on your agency (it depends alot) if you are IT you can seek your technology bliss
* and the pay check comes every 2 weeks... always
* did I say flexiplace
* generous tsp (retirement)
* depending on agency, great people to work with (science and statistics agencies that is)
* hmmm, did I say flexiplace?

cons
* work in dc area... just try to find a place in a non destitude area that is affordable
* Political Correctness rules
* Never ever say what you believe, think on any political, religious or social matter, no matter how main stream you think it is. The consequences are far reaching and persistant, much more than in the private sector. Depending on your job position you can be DESTROYED (jail time) based on a slip of the tongue. The addage in gov is "let your yes be yes and your no be no, anything else is a WELL CRAFTED memo", if you can't keep your yap shut find another employer.
* gov is has a diverse employee base. If you say anything not related to task at hand you will offend someone. Chances are you will offend someone even if your conversation is strickly limited to work issues. (see previous bullet)
* Metro sucks
* The beltway sucks
* Many people in gov feel that thier job is an entitlement like welfare (fortunately not were I work)

All in all the gov is great place to work but it depends on agency. There are satisfaction surveys for best agencies to work, and it's been my experience that it's accurate.

Good luck.

Yes, the govt is good and I am in the DC area. I have a good boss, I am busy most of the day and the people are nice. You are right, can't talk about anything with meaning, so we simply exchange pleasantries. I just stopped by here to see what was going on. Get this, it is the end of April and I am filling in at my old job. No, I will not come back but I will help a little. My old job didn't realize what they had when I was here, too late. Good luck to everyone here, I hope good jobs come through soon.
