God Help Me.......I am an elementary school teacher in the deep south. I teach in a miserable, oppressive inner-city school. Basically, I am in total hell! I don't know how much longer I can endure teaching. I am so stuck....I wanna cry! The only reason I am still teaching is because I have 3 young children; two of which attend a "good" school outside our own district. They are allowed to do so BECAUSE I am a teacher. I am really just allowing myself to be abused and tormented so that they will get a good education. Sad huh? I literally want to cry every morning when my alarm goes off and I have to force myself to get out of bed. When I get to school I feel like I am in prison. It is so bad I have to take anti-depressants and nerve pills just to get through the day. Some of the kids in my class are so vile that I could drop kick them into the next parish! They have severe behavioral problems and their parents(for lack of a better term) use the public school system as a free daycare center. The administration is terrible as well. What is it about zero people skills and public school administration? They have to be the most hateful, useless pieces of shit that I know. They find the most inconsequential bullshit to nit-pick about. HELP I AM DYING!!!!! Ever consider teaching at the private/decent public school your kids attend? As much as I hate to say it, your best chance is a charter school or School of Choice as we call them in Michigan. The public school system in 80% of this country is FUCKED! I should know, I'm a product of it... >:( Keep it evil, don't let the swamp gas get you down in that old Louisianna area. I'm travelin' down the road, Been flirtin' with disaster, Chorus: Speeding down the fast lane, Flirtin' with disaster, Chorus: Flirtin' with disaster, baby, Chorus: (Molly Hatchet: Gator Country) Ever consider teaching at the private/decent public school your kids attend? School systems in the South are unbelievable. I also think people down here seem to coddle their children more so than up there. Also, never assume a higher degree means higher intelligence. Some of the stupidest people hold PhDs. You can teach overseas, I don't know why people don't just go and do it. Fuck what you do, just change it. $25K(it's like making $100K in US) and free apartment and board. Take kids with you, maybe they learn korean for free, or chinese. Fuck, they will have to know chinese pretty soon, chinese will take over the world, hahahaha. Wally It sounds like you're still young enough to engineer a career change. I can't imagine a worse future than teaching in the PS system. Can you get enough paper to teach at a private university? This is my 4th year teaching special ed. in the south as well. I am originally from Ohio too (how ironic.) My second year of teaching was the absolute worst! I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, and could barely enjoy my newborn son. Everyday there was a complaint about me made to the office from a parent. Finally one day I broke down in the principal's office, and told her that would be my last day EVER as a teacher. She begged me to stay, and said that she saw so much potential in me (my high expectations, my teaching ability...etc.) After thinking about it over night, I agreed to stay. However, my whole attitude changed. From that point on, I saw it only as a job. 7:30-3:00. Homework-who cares? A parent wants their child to pass, they pass. You child can't read-I don't harp on that either. Your child is the biggest brat I have ever seen in my life...oh well! Your child is not autistic, he/she is a spoiled brat who has been brainwashed into believing she can use her disability to get what she wants..but...I keep that to myself. All I ever say is, "Johnny is doing great!" You would be amazed how much the attitudes have changed. Maybe I am part of the problem now, but I sleep much better! |
