Feeling Stuck HereI have worked in my job since 1999. It was supposed to be a short term job until I could find something better. Haha, joke's on me. Every time I think of that statement about starting out here, I get depressed. The sad thing is that I've been looking for work since about 2004 (on and off) and have found nothing that can match the salary here. And the salary here is still less than I was making prior to 1999. The salary is ok, but not great if you know what I mean. However, I've reached the point of extreme hatred for my job and I have realized I am going to have to step down into a MacJob just to get out of here. Even those MacJobs aren't that easy to find for a 54 year old. And then there's this pesky recession that encroaching or already here depending on who you talk to. I say we never climbed out the recession of the dot.com bust but what do I know? I am younger than you (I'm 40) but I also feel stuck in my dead-end job which nevertheless pays a decent (not great) salary. Unfortunately it really is a shit job that does nothing to enhance my resume and I've been in it way too long. I passed the extreme burnout point about 3 years ago. What with the economy turning so lousy, I also realize it is a pretty stable job and I'd be crazy to just quit now. I'm trying to save money. I also have been looking for work on and off but it is difficult to find a job I'm qualified for that even approaches this salary. you didn't mention if you are single, male/female, have kids, etc. My suggestion to you is to try to detach emotionally from your extreme hatred for the job... if you don't, you will wind up making bad choices out of desperation. You want to make smart smaller choices instead of bigger, bad ones. Yes, I am working on detaching emotionally. I used to get all stressed out about whether I would be 5 minutes late and shit like that. Now I don't care and I don't think about that place when I'm away. When I catch myself thinking about it, I shut it off by replacing the thought with something else. I am a man with grown kids since you asked. Spent a lot my savings on their education and not looking forward to becoming a burden to them. ...Regarding the "smaller smart choices instead of bigger, bad ones." I guess the best way to look at is baby steps toward a better situation. Gradual progression, unless, of course, you win the lottery! |
