I hate working here...I'm a radio DJ, and I used to love my job. It's fun, easy, and the hours are great. The pay isn't what I wish it was, but you have to take the good with the bad, right? My immediate boss, however, is an egotistical, humorless, jerk who seems to like finding reasons to yell at me. I get to work well before he does, and I work hard to make myself better at my job. But he's one of those people who can't be pleased. When my show ends, I have nothing else left to do, so I go home. But, everyday, he gives me a "where do you think you're going?" kind of look, as if I'm supposed to sit around for a few more hours doing nothing. I ask him routinely if there's anything he needs me to do, and he always says no, so it's not like I just decided that I was done with everything. I work a second job, so I can't just sit around the office wasting time, doing nothing. I need to feed myself before going to my other job. Is that so wrong? As for his boss, the boss of the building, I had him all wrong. He seemed like a nice, personable guy. But, it turns out he's unprofessional and just as much a part of the "cool" clique as my immediate boss and some of the other people, including his girlfriend. Yes, he's involved with someone who works for him; I'm not even going to get into that dynamic. But to understand part of why I feel my boss's boss is so unprofessional, let's go back about 2 weeks. I got in trouble for doing what I was told to do. As stupid as that sounds, it's what happened. A guy in the office, we'll call him Fuzz, asked me to pick finalists for a contest, and he gave me a CD with the entries. The documents wouldn't open on the computer here, and I told him. I was told to try it at home, and if it didn't work, I could do it on Monday. So, I went home, and it didn't work. So on Monday he set everything up on his computer and told me, "Do this as fast as you can. If you see something you don't like, just go on to the next one. I need this now." So, I spent about 20 minutes picking my finalists, going onto the next entry if I saw something I didn't like. Two days later, my boss and his boss sat me down and told me that what I did was bad, and that I didn't take the task seriously. Other people "spent hours" picking their finalists, and I just ran through it like it didn't matter. I explained to both of them that Fuzz told me to go as fast as possible, etc. That wasn't good enough. I should have asked him how long I should spend on it, and when he wanted it. And they asked why I didn't call him over the weekend when it didn't work on my home computer. Someone, please tell me, aside from covering my bases, what good would calling Fuzz have done me? He wouldn't have come to my house to bring the software I needed to open the documents. He wouldn't have had me come to his house. Nothing would have been different. But, I was still in trouble for that. So, toward the end of the meeting, I expressed that Fuzz is usually rude to me, to which my boss and his boss said, "No, he's the nicest guy I know. He does so much for other people in this office." Well, of course you think he's nice. HE'S YOUR FRIEND. It's something I, not you, have experienced. And to tell me that my opinion is incorrect, when there really is no right or wrong, is really bad management. They didn't even ask me why I felt that Fuzz was rude. They just jumped to his defense because he's their friend. With the meeting, I was guilty before going to court. They'd made their decision about the situation because it involved their friend. As for why my boss's boss is unprofessional... Everyday when he comes in, he walks around the office saying hi to everyone. Ever since that meeting, he's ignored me completely. He'll see me and not say anything. And not just in the morning when he walks around the office. Whenever he sees me PERIOD he ignores me. How can you run an office if you're ignoring people who work there? How is that a good work environment? Is this something that increases productivity, and I'm just unaware of it? The bottom line is that I work with rude, humorless, egotistical people who don't like anyone outside of their clique. I know that 99.9% of all workplaces are like that, and that probably won't change. But, don't people realize that their behavior creates hostility and makes people feel unwanted and ignored? I work hard, and I play by the rules. I think I deserve at least a shred of respect from my co-workers. Is that too much to ask for? For someone who used to work in the same industry as you, I have to say that it is dying and you need to start looking at something else for a career. If the Sirius / XM merger goes through then terrestrial radio is going to be in trouble. You and I sound a lot alike. For someone who doesn't have an ego, it's difficult to roll in either radio or television. I worked in both industries and it is filled with nothing but egos and assholes. Save your soul and get out if you have any shred of humanity. Besides, terrestrial radio is moving more toward voice-tracking and automation. Nothing is done live anymore with the exception of talk radio. I agree that terrestrial radio is dying, but I'm in a fairly decent position, as I'm well versed in other areas than on-air. I've considered looking for something else, and I'd like to do more with production. I've contacted a few openings, and each time I was told I'm too inexperienced (6 years apparently isn't enough) and also, they want me to move immediately, which I can't do because of some reasons I can't say at this time. But, I've considered getting out of radio. I do a live, non-talk show 5 days a week, and it seems as though it will remain live as long as the station is here. I'm jaded at a young age, and I'm resigned to just collecting a paycheck, for the time being at least. But, you're right. I need to think hard about getting into something else. Thanks for the feedback. :) That's the thing that really pissed me off about the broadcast industry - "not enough experience." What the fuck is that!? That translates to: "You need to kiss my ass some more before I give you a gig." If you haven't done so, check in to ad agencies, production houses, production companies, etc. I too liked the production side of things and there are gigs out there. You just need to be creative in your search. You don't have to be in radio. Also, think about a lot of the stuff going on web. People who work in multimedia are good at programming it, but need to have guys like you to give it some pizzaz. I also work in Radio, not on the air, however I know exactly what you are talking about. We were bought up by some big corporation and they came in, swooped down, made major changes, now people are all unhappy and want to leave. For the first time ever I called in sick and took a mental health day. The abuse that we receive from some people is beyond words. I spent a good part of yesterday looking for another job. My boss is a dick just like yours. No backbone to stand up for his people, lets others that are not in a position of authority to dictate to us how things are to be done. Even when they make the errors, it is somehow twisted and turned around to blame us. The frustration is insurmountable and I can only agree with the other posters here, get out while you have some dignity left.......
