So anyway, I have realized that parents can fuck up their kid's education more than any other factor.

I am back in Asia teaching ESL - a decent job where I drive around all day doing one hour sessions at community centers and such for kids in the day and adults at night.

Most afternoons I have preschool kids from a church in town and sometimes classes with their older siblings. Kids are GREAT, I went from being freaked about teaching kids to LOVING it. We just play games for an hour, the point being it is all in English. Kids are not bored, nor am I, and they are using the language instead of just slogging through a boring textbook.

That is until the kyouiku mamas (education mothers) got on my case. One woman wants a weekly lesson plan and updates, and for me to buy texts with my money. For a 45 minute session once a month.

Gimme a break.

In another class, some problem kids put their nose to the grindstone and in return I promise to show them a movie. I bring in Ghostbusters to reward them, the mpther sees it and goes flippo, sreaming at me in broken English. Kids are like "Are we seeing the movie next week teacher?" with their big puppy dog eyes. I say no, ask your mother why.

Sad, sad, sad.

So when this offer to teach at a university came in, guess what? I jumped ship.

I feel bad for the kids and miss teaching them. But on the bright side I get more moolah, chance of advancement, more English workmates and CV fodder for less working hours. WIn win situation?

For everyone except the kids, I guess.
