This story that follows is pure fiction but is based on the reality of family run enterprises. This is the type of business where in many instances, family members are fast tracked up the corporate ladder and where relatives with no track record are given positions of power and responsibility.
The new secretary wanted to make a good impression with her boss so when two smart suited young men came striding into the office, she knew what she had to do.
“Is Mr. B in?” said one of the men in a condescending tone.
“No,” replied the secretary bluntly as she rose from her chair, “Can I have your name?”
“You don’t need my name, girl,” replied the young man putting hands on hips, “I happen to be the boss’s nephew and I’m also the CEO! And this is my cousin who is the CFO.”
The other man looked up with a self-satisfied smile and straightened his tie.
“Be as it may, Mr. B will be here within the hour,” said the secretary without flinching, “Please take a seat.”
The young businessman was furious. He was not used to being snubbed by anyone, least of all a woman one foot shorter than himself. Without a word, he turned on his heel and walked to the door of the manager’s office followed by his buddy. He tried to open the door but it was locked; that made him even madder. The secretary jumped up and walked towards them but the man with the smug face put his arm out and stopped her.
“Look, miss, we’re kind of busy here,” he said arrogantly, “Just give us the key or open the office yourself, ok?”
The secretary wasn’t taking any of this and she acted in the way she was trained in situations like this – she brought her leg up, catching the young man in the groin. As he doubled up clutching himself, she chopped him in the neck and sent him crashing to the ground. The other man spun round and stood with his mouth open at the sight of his pal lying knocked out cold on the floor at the small woman’s feet.
“You’re as good as fired, lady,” he snarled, pointing menacingly at her. The woman’s hand shot up and caught his finger, twisting it back. As the young man howled in pain, she pulled him by the arm, turned him round in and arc and sent him flat against the wall. The businessman peeled himself off the wallpaper, turned groggily around and put his fists up. He was about to lunge at her but she kicked him in the chest, sending him back to the wall; his skull hit the brick and he went dizzy. As he slid down the wall with his head reeling, she stepped over the other guy, walked back to her desk and called her boss giving him a detailed account of what she had just done.
“You fool,” shouted the boss, “That is my nephew!”
“But I thought you told me he would be in next week,” protested the young woman as she peered over her desk at the two men writhing and moaning on the carpet. As her boss screamed abuse over the phone she knew that there was only one thing to do now. She took her bag, gathered her few belongings and walked out of the door. As the elevator doors slid shut on her job she caught a glimpse of the two haggard executives staggering out of her former office, swearing and shaking their fists at her.
