Requiem For A DreamI think the title says it all when it comes to my awakening in the corporate world and to life in general. When I started work I had high hopes. When I was a child I saw the world as full of promise. Now that I'm older I see my mistakes; in life and in work. When we say we were sold a bill of goods we are doing more than repeating some trite saying. We are telling the truth. We were literally taught that hard work is rewarded. We were literally trained to be obedient to those in "authority." We were literally taught to suppress our natural wants and desires for the good of "society" or "to get along" or "to be good little boys/girls." We were taught not to question but to accept what we are told: pay your taxes, get a good paying job, make sacrifices for society/God/country/whatever, marry and have 2.5 kids and a house with a white picket fence and then you will be happy. Actually we weren't taught, we were brainwashed. I can only hope to forgive myself and move on. |
